Dempo College bags top honours

PANJIM: SS Dempo College of Commerce and Economics emerged champions while Government College of Arts, Science and Commerce

Quepem secured the runners-up spot at the Sports Festival for College and Higher Secondary Schools, organized by Fr Agnel College of Arts and Commerce, Pilar, at College campus, Pilar, recently.
The aim of the sports festival was to revive traditional sports amongst today’s gadget savvy generation. 
It acted as a platform for teams to illustrate their enthusiasm, showcase their leadership skills and acumen to be champions. The festival hosted six modified traditional games and two modern games and was inaugurated by Dr Fr Allan Tavares SFX, Administrator of Fr. Agnel College, Pilar.
Thirteen teams took part in the event with eagerness and zest.
Te trophies were distributed along with the certificates by Fr Roncy Braganza, Principal of Fr Agnel Central School, Pilar.  
Amongst the tradition games the cycle tyre racing for men saw about nine participating teams. The winner was Vincy Fernandes of Government College of Arts, Science and Commerce, Quepem. The second place went to Shivam Borkar from SS Dempo College. 
Doryiani (skipping rope race) for women saw participation of 11 teams which was won by Prashila Deikar while the second place went to Savita Velip, both from Cuncolim Educational Society’s College of Arts and Commerce, Cuncolim. 
Milani for men is a game that showcased marksmanship where participants used marbles to aim at the mil (a little hole on an even ground). Seven teams participated in the event and Rohit Pednekar of Fr Agnel Higher Secondary School was the winner. Second place was secured by Prashant Kankonkar from Fr Agnel College of Arts and Commerce, Pilar and third place went to Edwin Pereira of Nirmala Institute of Education, Althino.
Langdi race for women lasted for 75 meters to be covered hopping on one leg. Ten teams participated in the event and Karuna Kankonkar of Fr Agnel College of Arts and Commerce, Pilar emerged winner. The second place went to Macrenna Dias of Government College of Arts, Science and Commerce, Quepem. Lagorio for women saw nine teams participating. The team of four girls from Narayan Zantye College of Commerce, Bicholim won the event and Shree Mallikarjun College of Arts and Commerce, Canacona were the runners-up. 
In Men’s Koyno Bal, Government College of Arts, Science and Commerce, Quepem won the event and Shree Mallikarjun College of Arts and Commerce, Canacona were the runners-up. 
Cricket with a twist came in the form of hit-hit boundaries for men and women where the day was all about fours and sixes. Participants could strike the ball without restraint for there was no fear of losing a wicket by catch. Ten teams participated in the event where each team consisted of three players. The team from SS Dempo College of Commerce and Economics won the event and the second place was bagged by Fr Agnel College of Arts and Commerce, Pilar.  
Short-sided football for men was won by SS Dempo College as Cuncolim Educational Society’s College of Arts and Commerce settled for the runners-up spot.
The managing committee for the sports festival constituted of Dr Fredrick Rodrigues (SFX), also chairman of the event; Dr Allan Tavares (SFX) and Fr Nirmaldo Fernandes (SFX). The chief coordinator was Agnelo Dias.
