PANJIM: Defending champions FC Goa bowed out of the Goa Police Cup, losing 3-5 on penalties to Dempo SC at the Duler Stadium, Mapusa
The sides remained 1-1 after the end of the regular time after HP Lalremruata scored his third goal in as many games in the competition to give the FC Goa Dev Team the lead heading into the break. However, a resolute Dempo made the most of their only real opportunity in the game when Padro Gonsalves lobbed over Hansel Coelho to bring the game back on level terms.
Dempo keeper Wellyster Mendes turned out to be the star of the show – making crucial saves during prolonged periods of domination by FC Goa and then helping his team win it on penalties.
The Dempo players kept their nerves to slot in all five spot kicks with the game going to penalties while their keeper was on spot to deny Rayan Menezes, who took FC Goa’s fourth spot kick.
In the tie breaker – Dempo SC scored through Pedro Gonsalves, Klusner Pereira, Rajat Harijan, Edwin Viegas and Shubham Malvankar while Lesley Rebello, Ivon Costa and Lalremruata shot at the mark for FC Goa. Ivon Costa of FC Goa was given best player of the match award.
