Fatima Convent in finals

Title aspirants Fatima Convent High School, Margao rallied to beat Holy Rosary Convent High School, Nuvem 1-0 to cruise into the finals of Salcete Taluka U-14 girls inter-school football tournament at Government ground, Manora, Raia on Thursday. The all- important goal was scored by striker Anline Fernandes in the opening session.
Fatima Convent started the match on a positive note attacking their rivals with long aerial balls from deep inside their own territory. Captain Eva played a stellar role in the defence and fed upfront for strikers Anline and Marlette. The Nuvem girls were mostly on the defensive and conceded the goal midway through the first session when Fatima’s mid-fielder Sherly Fernandes and Grayten combined well on the edge of the box to set up Arlene inside the area and the striker, taking the opportunity, unleashed a right footer which crashed into the nylons giving no chance to the rival goalkeeper.
After the resumption, the Nuvem girls came back strongly in search of the equaliser but Fatima’s stoppers Eva and Senita Tavares put up a good performance in the defence. Goalkeeper Merl Rodrigues also played her part well in keeping her citadel intact and kept her players in a better frame of mind.
In the second semi-final, Manovikas English Medium School, Margao blanked St Anthony’s High School, Majorda 2-0. Manovikas were leading 1-0 at the breather. Manovikas went into the lead through a spot kick. Simone Lalwani slotted past the rival goalkeeper.
After the break, Manovikas attacked and were rewarded when Simone’s free kick just outside the box gave no chance whatsoever to the rival goalkeeper.
Manovikas, Margao will now meet Fatima Convent, Margao in the finals slated for September 3.
