VAGATOR: Friends XI Vaddem edged past Saligao Sporting 2-1, to clinch the 18th Vagator Soccer Cup 2016, organized by Vagator Parish Youth, at Ozran ground, recently.
After some midfield action Vaddem shot into the lead in the 11th minute of play when Denzil Sequeira on getting hold of the ball charged into the Saligao danger zone and fired the ball into the far corner of the net. Couple of minutes later Vaddem further inflated their lead when Edberg Sequeira’s powerful shot had no answer from the Saligao custodian.
Crossing over, Saligao managed to reduce the margin to 2-1 through a fine solo effort by Sachin Chopdekar.
Vaddem received a cash prize of Rs 40,000 plus trophy while Saligao had to content with 30,000 and trophy.
Best goalkeeper was awarded to Augusto D’Mello (Saligao Sporting), best midfielder Creigh Menezes (Saligao Sporting), best defender Devendra Khatunkar (Friends XI), first goal scorer of the final Denzil Sequeira (Friends XI), best goal of the tournament Amar Kinlekar (Friends XI), promising player of the tournament Tanay Naik (Vagator PYSC), senior most valuable player Vinayak Mulgaonkar (Vagator PYSC).
Earlier, the chief guest Milton Marques, guest of honour, Girish Raga, Sadanand Vernekar, Special Invitees, Ramakant Shirodkar, Lavino Rebello and Anjuna Caisua VP members were introduced to the players and match officials.
