GERMANY SLAM SIX PAST CHILE, INTO LAST EIGHT

MARGAO: Germany duly booked their spot in the quarterfinals from Group B of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup with a 6-0 demolition of Chile at the PJN Stadium at Fatorda on Friday.

Jella Veit (20’), Alara Sehitler (24’), Mara Alber (40’), Marie Steiner (penalty, 58’), Loren Bender (60’) and Laila Portella (95’) shared the goals that took Germany’s point tally to six after their  2-1 win over Nigeria in the opener on Tuesday.

The result knocked New Zealand out of the race and left Chile and Nigeria to fight it out for the other quarterfinal spot from the group.

Nigeria and Chile on three points each after beating New Zealand 4-0 and 3-1 respectively will do battle in Bhubaneswar on Monday with the Africans needing only a draw to progress, while the USA and Morocco play their concluding Group A league match here on the same day.

Chilean coach Alex Castro promised attacking football from his team but on the day, with the defence in a shambles, there was little or no momentum to take up front.

Catalina Alvarado, the Chilean goalkeeper, would like to forget the match in a hurry after committing two ball-handling blunders to let in the fifth and sixth goals which, in the final analysis, could prove crucial if it comes down to goal difference.

Alber and Sehitler scored their second goals of the tournament and Germany, with an imposing 8-1 goal record, go into their concluding league match against New Zealand on Monday.
