PANJIM, NOV 17
Gilbert Oliveira’s lone goal in the second half helped Salgaocar Sports Club register a narrow 1-0 win over Sesa Football Academy in Kingfisher Pro League at Duler stadium, Mapusa on Wednesday.
After a couple of missed chances by Salgaocar early, it was their rivals who would have shot into the lead in the closing stages of the first half, but skipper Inacio Colaco failed twice to hit the target from handshaking distance after he was spoonfed by teammate Sidroy Afonso.
With the entry of Ryuji Sueoka and Anthony Barbosa, just before the breather, the attack of Salgaocar’s strikers kept the Sesa defense on their toes.
In the 62nd minute, Sesa could not help themselves as U-20 Gilbert Oliveira came from behind to slot the ball in.
Salgaocar had two more chances to further increase their lead but substitutes Thoi Singh and Ryuji failed to direct their headers accurately. Though the Green Brigade held the upper hand in the remaining part of the match, yet Sesa would have levelled terms, but striker Gabriel Monteiro came a poor cropper shooting out from just outside the 6-yard box after being set up by Lezly Fernandes.
In the 83rd minute, Salgaocar were reduced to ten men as defender Syed Farid was sent off by referee Adley D’Costa for a double booking. With this win, Salgaocar, Dempo and Churchill are all locked at 18 points each.
