PANJIM: Former Goa Ranji Trophy cricketer Rajesh Ghodge passed away after suffering a massive heart attack during a local tournament, at the Rajendra Prasad Stadium in Margao, on Sunday.
The incident occurred at around 3 p.m. during a Margao Cricket Club (MCC) tournament match. Ghodge who was 43-year-old was at the non-striker’s end with a score of 31 runs during the match between MCC Challengers and MCC Dragons. According to eyewitnesses, Ghodge suddenly collapsed and was rushed immediately to the nearby ESI hospital where the doctors tried to revive him but failed.
He was also then shifted to Apollo Hospital, but was pronounced dead on arrival.
Ghodge, who made his debut in the 1999-2000 season, has played two first-class matches in which he has scored 76 runs. He has also played eight List A matches for Goa where he has registered 115 runs with a half-century.
The Goa Cricket Association(GCA) condoled the death of Rajesh Ghodge. Ghodge was part of the Ranji trophy selection committee from 2015 to 2018.
“Cricket in Goa has lost a great person. Ghodge was always there to help in any way he could and his loss is a great loss for cricket in Goa ,” stated GCA President Suraj Lotlikar. “
Cricket was Ghodge’s first love. He would do anything for cricket. Time or place was never a problem for Ghodge when it came to do something for cricket. GCA has lost a person who tirelessly worked to improve cricket in Goa,” stated GCA Secretary Daya Pagi.
The Executive Committee of GCA condoled the death of Mr. Rajesh Ghodge. “We have lost a friend of cricket,” was the condolence message of the GCA Executive Committee.
