MAPUSA: Holy Cross Sports Club Arambol fought back from a goal down to hold Cunchelim Sports Club to a 1-1 draw in the GFA’s 2nd Division League match played at Duler Stadium, here on Friday.
Arambol started brightly and in the 12th minute Abraham Fernandes darted towards the danger box and fed the ball to well positioned Hemant Rodrigues who failed to get pass the Cunchelim keeper.
Rohit should have found the net for Arambol five minutes later but his placement was off target after being put in by Godwin.
Cunchelim who were late in getting off their blocks had a first decent attempt in the 21st minute of a neat build up between Nayan and Rohit who then passed the ball to Ganesh Poojar who could not sort out his feet to tap the ball in the empty goal and the chance was wasted.
Arambol kept squandering chances as this time Hemant failed to get the better of the keeper in a one to one situation after intercepting a miss clearance from Aryan Shaikh in the 38th minute.
Cunchelim took the lead four minutes into the second half through Mahableshwar who guided the ball into the nets off an intelligent pass by Rohan Kamble.
Keeper Sandeep Pawar came to his sides rescue with a superlative save to deny Arambol`s Godwin`s 30 yard rasping drive from crashing into the nets in the 52nd minute
Arambol kept probing and finally found the equaliSer through a free kick by Godwin Fernandes which had no answer from the keeper.
Cunchelim tried to find the match winning goal but Mahableshwar was guilty of missing easy sitters in the 69th and 77th minute
Arambol almost snatched a win in the closing minute but Stepilloin Fernandes shot hit the far post and entered into play to the relief of the Cunchelim players.
