MARGAO: A second half strike by Joseph Pereira enabled host St Anthony Sports Club, Colva overcome Parish Youth, Nuvem 1-0 to storm into the quarter-final of All Goa St Anthony’s Super Soccer UK Cup tournament organized by St Anthony’s Sports Club, Colva, at DYSA ground, Colva on Sunday.
There was no score at half time. In an evenly poised battle, the teams adopted aggressive approach. However, the goalkeepers came to their teams’ rescue by effecting superlative saves. After the break, they showed urgency and launched barrage of attacks but the defenders stood tall in protecting their citadel intact.
The all-important goal came in the 56th minute when striker Joseph slotted past the rival goalkeeper with snap shot off well measured pass by Ryan Fernandes.
On Saturday, Saligao United got the better of St Anthony’s Sports Club, Assolda 6-5 via tie-breaker to march into the quarter-final. In the ensuing penalty shoot out, Soma K, Amar Haldankar, Paulo Joao, Domingos Fernandes, Micheal Dias and Clinton Rodrigues converted for Saligao United while Stanley Hadangali, Juliao Fernandes, Sunny Fernandes, Alton Vaz and Joseph Dias scored for St Anthony’s Sports Club.
