PANJIM: As the Goa Professional League crossed the half-way mark with Salgaocar FC currently leading the table with 17 points from seven games, the single-leg league has been a huge success till now.
While the race for the title is still wide open with Sporting Clube de Goa, Dempo SC and couple of more teams still in fray, its the relegation battle where all eyes are on. Sesa FA are at the bottom on three points from six games while Guardian Angel SC are on five points after seven games. While there were plenty of questions raised whether there would be relegation this time considering the league was played single-legged instead of their regular double legged system, GFA Vice President North Lavinio Rebello cleared the air and said, “We are definitely having relegation. This is not a festival like Indian Super League. This is a competition and we will be having relegation this year irrespective of who finishes last. “This was already discussed at the mangers’ meeting and accepted by all the clubs,” stated Lavinio who stated that the GFA competitions are designed with promotions and relegations. “It was also discussed at the GFA executive committee and approved,” he concluded.
The Goa Football Association were the first body to resume the sporting activities after being stopped by the COVID pandemic last summer.
