Jayganesh nets winner for Saligao United in five-goal thriller against Goan Warriors

PANJIM: Saligao United scored a thrilling 3-2 win over Goan Warriors Football Club to move into the next round of the 14th London Trophy Inter-Village Football Tournament, organised by Goa Velha Sports Club and played at Goa Velha Sports Club ground, on Thursday.

Saligao United surged ahead in the 15th minute of play through Craig Menezes who chested the ball into the net beating the Warriors keeper off a Meriston Pires cross. 

Goan Warriors Football Club retaliated and nearly found the equaliser in the 18th minute but Chetan Shirodkar saw his effort hit the crossbar. 

Govind Mahale consolidated the lead for Saligao United when he calmly placed the ball into the Warriors net off an intelligent pass from Meriston Pires. Saligao United led 2-0 at half time.

Goan Warriors Football Club went all out with renewed vigour in the second half and managed to reduce the deficit through Santil Mulgaonkar who shot home off Chetan Shirodkar. 

Santil Mulgaonkar completed his brace and netted the equaliser for Goan Warriors Football Club as he tapped home into the Saligao United goal after an initial effort by Rahul Naik was not cleanly collected by the Saligao keeper Agustin D’Mello. 

Stunned by the two goals, Saligao United regrouped and went all out in search of the winner. Jayganesh Goltekar saw his header saved by the rival keeper. 

Saligao United finally found the match-winner through the individual brilliance of Jayganesh Goltekar who strolled past the Warriors defence and shot home.
