PANJIM: A good day for the Kolkata teams in the Hero Indian Super League as SC East Bengal and ATK Mohun Bagan enjoyed success in their respective encounters on Sunday.
While ATK Mohun Bagan regained the top spot defeating NorthEast United 2-0, it was the news of East Bengal finally tasting their first win in the competition after eight games, what was delight to the Kolkata fans. East Bengal defeated Odisha 3-1.
At Fatorda Stadium, it was Roy Krishna who scored first and then a Benjamin Lambot own goal helped the Kolkata side claim three points as both goals came in the second session.
Edu Garcia’s corner was flicked by Tiri into Krishna’s path who headed in to put his side ahead in the game.
The second goal also came from a corner but this time Garcia’s corner was guided in by NEUFC player Lambot to double the lead for ATKMB.
NorthEast weren’t threatening but came agonisingly close to scoring with 20 minutes left but Federico Gallego’s attempt came off the crossbar.
At Tilak Maidan, it was a sigh of relief for Robbie Fowler who looked much relaxed in the second half after his side East Bengal were ahead by two goals at the break.
East Bengal took the lead in the 12th minute through Anthony Pilkington when he headed in from close after the Odisha defence failed to deal with a Gaikwad’s long throw in.
Jacques Maghoma doubled the lead in the 39th minute when he was played through by Matti Steinmann before getting past two man and scoring past the keeper.
Odisha missed the chance to reduce the deficit when Jerry’s strike hit the upright.
East Bengal took the game beyond Odisha’s reach after Enobakhare scored on his debut.
Odisha finally pulled a goal back through Diego Mauricio in the stoppage time.
