Lifa starts Churchill Bros campaign on a high

Nets the solitary goal to pip Goa Velha

MAPUSA: New entrants Churchill Brothers started their campaign of the GFA Vendanta Women’s League 2018-19 organised by Goa Football Association on a winning note by registering 1-0 win over Goa Velha, played under floodlights, at Duler Stadium, here, on Thursday.
Before the start of the match, all the participating teams were welcomed by GFA’s President Elvis Gomes while Sapna Sapho,  AIFF-in charge of Women’s Development declared the second edition open in the presence of GFA’s Vice President Lavino Rebello,  Schubert Furtado, Juliana Colaco, chairperson for Women’s League and GFA’s committee members.
The first session was dominated by Churchill Brothers where they almost scored in the 14th minute through Lifa Tavares but her placement missed the nets narrowly.
However, in the 20th minute, Lifa scored with a neat header where a lob shot from Michel Castanha’s rebounded off the post, 1-0.
On resumption of play, Goa Velha’s eves held the upper hand but the strikers failed to beat the last line of defence.
In the 53rd minute, Goa Velha Ansiva Vas’s goal bound shot was blocked by Churchill Brothers defender Laura Estibeiro.
Anisva was indeed unlucky as her three-time efforts were saved by Churchill keeper Rima Gadekar. In the closing stages of the match this time Churchill Brothers defender Laura came with a timely clearance before Goa Velha’s Divya Tuyenkar could find the nets.
Goa Velha’s Ansiva received the women’s match award from Elvis Gomes and Juliana Colaco.
