MARGAO: Verna Sports Club huffed and puffed their way past St Anthony’s Sports Club, Colva 1-0 to cruise into the quarter-finals of all-Goa Fr Basilo Andrade memorial inter-village football tournament, organized by Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs, at Musson ground, Majorda, Wednesday.
There was no score at lemon break.
The teams started the game on sedate note as a result the play was confined to midfield. There were few attempts at the rival goals but defenders stood tall in protecting the citadel.
Crossing over, Verna put up a better display and fired couple of pot shots against the rival citadel but yielded no result.
The all-important goal came in the 46th minute when Mathias Moniz bulge the net giving no chance to the rival goalkeeper.
