PANJIM: Navelim Sporting Club squeezed past St Rock Youth Club Majorda 2-1 to enter the quarter-finals of the 34th Strikers Trophy, organised by Young Strikers Club Benaulim at St John the Baptist ground, Dando-Benaulim, on Friday.
Both the teams wasted decent chances with the best coming for Majorda in the 16th minute when striker Josely Dias shot over the bar from inside the box.
At the other end, Navelim winger Travis Sousa’s effort was cleared off the goalline by Majorda defender Lenny Fernandes.
Post resumption, Navelim were more forceful and deservingly went ahead in the 50th minute when medio Ariston Gomes sent in a floater which created a misunderstanding between Majorda defender Lenny Fernandes and goalkeeper Clinton Antao which allowed Navelim striker Aulon Gomes to dart in and head inside the nylon.
Navelim pressured the rivals and tasted more success when winger Prrestly Gomes taking a fine pass off Fr Americo Rodrigues blasted a left footer past Clinton Antao.
St Rock Youth Club Majorda fought till the end and playmaker Quan Gomes converted an excellent free-kick past Navelim Sporting goalkeeper Selvin Gomes.
