RAIA: Navelim Sporting Club defeated Parish Youth Nuvem 6-4 via the tie-breaker and emerged champions in 12th Cana-Benaulim Village Panchayat Cup inter-village football tournament organized by Cana Benaulim Sporting Association at St John de Baptista ground, Dando, Benaulim, Sunday. The teams were tied 2-2 at full session.
Jonas Colaco and Meislein Barreto both of Nuvem, missed scoring chances at the start. Later, Prestley Gomes and Ariston Costa failed to found the net for Navelim.
PY Nuvem took the lead through Alvito Dias in the 26th minute. Two minutes later, Joywin Costa doubled the lead with a neat placement. The teams took on to attacking in the second session and with just five minutes left for the final whistle, Navelim first reduced the margin and then equalised through prolific striker Clinton Niasso and Prestley Gomes.
In the ensuing tie-breaker, Nash Pereira, Myran Gomes, Sadroy Costa and Clinton Niasso netted for Navelim. Joywin Costa and Meislein Barreto were on target for Nuvem.
Navelim won Rs 60,000 and Nuvem had to be content with Rs 40,000 besides trophies. Following individual prizes were awarded: Best player of the tournament Cipriano Barreto (ABC Arambol). Best player of final Jonas Colaco (Parish Youth Nuvem). First scorer of final Alvito Dias (Parish Youth Nuvem). Best midfielder of final Inacio Colaco (Parish Youth Nuvem). Best defender of final Aden Pereira (Navelim SC). Best disciplined team ABC Arambol.
Caetano Fernandes, GFA president was the chief guest and gave away the prizes in the presence of Fr. Anthony Carvalho, Parish Priest of St John de Baptista church, Xavier Pereira, Sarpanch of Cana-Benaulim, Anthony Pango senior GFA vice-president, Anthony Fernandes, Andrew Ferrao, GFA executive members, Charles Fernandes and others.
