CALANGUTE: Nerul Sports Club prevailed over St. Savio Sports Club, Calangute 5-3 via the tie-breaker after a goalless draw to move into semi-finals of Honeybee Friendship Cup inter-village football tournament, organized by Candolim Sports Club, at Dr. Gustavo Monteiro Stadium, Candolim, Wednesday.

Calangute dominated the initial stage and came close to scoring on couple of occasions. A Rajkumar free kick was saved by the Nerul keeper Xavier Estrocio in the 5th minute.

Another good try by Blake Haldankar off Ashley Lobo was saved by the Nerul keeper in the 12th minute.

Nerul could have taken the lead in the 14th minute but Amit Naik’s shot hit the defender resulting in a corner which failed to produce any result.

In the 16th minute, Calangute keeper Mashal Fernandes affected a brilliant save of Jennifer Clemente’s try to deny a goal for Nerul. Jennifer messed up again shooting straight into the rival keeper in the 18th minute.

Changing over, Calangute kept raiding the rival citadel time and again but their forwards Colin Siero, Blake Haldankar ran out of ideas in front of the goal. Nerul too came close to scoring but Jennifer missed two gilt edge chances with few minutes remaining for the final whistle.

The winners were decided on penalties. Nerul kept their cool to romp home winners 5-3 through Avinash Shirodker, Gautam Naik, Siddhanth Shirodker, Jennifer Clemente and Sainath Kalangutkar while Domnic Fernandes, Rajkumar Naik and Agnelo Fernandes netted for losers.

Nerul will take on Football Club of Siolim in the semi-final.
