MARGAO, JULY 14
Milagres Gonsalves was the lone Salgaocar player who reported for the preparatory camp in progress here to select the Goa team for the Santosh Trophy to be held in Kolkata.
On day three, Salgoacar players Bevan D’Mello, Marcus Mascarenhas, Francis Fernandes, William Colaco, Cajetan Fernandes  and Anthony Barbosa were yet to report.
A GFA official, meanwhile, told Herald in Panjim that Salgaocar had sent a fax this morning stating that some of their players were not fit. The relevant medical certificates were also sent, it is learnt.
The GFA has asked Salgaocar to report with their selected players for a medical check by a doctor appointed by the association tomorrow to ascertain the medical fitness.
Several club officials have opined that the timing of the Santosh Trophy by the AIFF was not proper as the players have to report much early after the one-and-month break. Normally, it is during July that the players after a well earned rest, take up to conditioning and fitness regimen so as to prepare for the hard season ahead. “After a well deserved rest, you cannot ask the players to play directly. As such, the timing of hosting the National event is terrible,” an official, who preferred to remain anonymous for obvious fear of being chargesheeted or showcaused by AIFF official stated.
