Right from the beginning PCCE showed great composure. They questioned the Damodar defence many a times. In the seventh minute itself the Verna College looked dangerous when Daniel Monteiro sent a cross from the right wing and Damodar defender Calver Fernandes failed to deal with the ball. As a result the ball fell to Yadriff Borges nut the latter missed to direct his half volley into the back of the net.
PCCE didn’t stop there and coach Savio Fernandes directed to boys to press harder. The move paid dividends as a through ball from Filbert Crasto fell to an onrushing Daniel who did well to beat Meldon D’Silva on the run but failed to finish the ball.
In the 15th minute, Meldon brought down Daniel and match referee Dominic Araujo awarded a spot-kick to PCCE. However, in the resultant spot-kick captain Joel Gama saw his effort hit the cross bar, much to the disbelief of the PCCE camp.
The second half started with Damodar college showing better intent but the teams failed to break the deadlock. The resultant tie-breaker also could not separate the teams and the sudden-death had to be enforced which went in favour of PCCE.
Damodar goalkeeper Tushar Naik shot wide in their final attempt and Kinan D’Souza scored, sending the PCCE camp in raptures.
PCCE now move into the semi-final and will face the winner of Rosary College Navelim v. Govt College Quepem, which play on October 6, at Rosary ground Navelim, 10.30 a.m.
