MARGAO: Guardian Angel High School, Sanvordem prevailed over St Xavier High School, Velim 8-7 via tie-breaker to cruise into the semi-finals of GFA Coca Cola under-14 inter-school football tournament, at Holy Trinity ground, Benaulim, on Friday.
Both the teams were tied 2-2 at the end of regulation period.
In an evenly poised encounter, the teams displayed attacking brand of soccer and had equal number of chances. It was St Xavier High School who surged ahead in the 8th minute when Stanley Fernandes punished the rival goalkeeper with snap shot.
Spurred by the early success, St Xavier intensified their attacks and pushed their opponents on the back foot.
Stanley struck second time to register his brace in the 16th minute.
Down by 0-2, Guardian Angel regrouped quickly and instantly took the fight to the rival camp. Kimaran Fernandes reduced the deficit in the 19th minute.
Boosted by the reducer, Guardian Angel piled on the pressure and Mark Fernandes equalized in the 20th minute.
Guardian Angel had the last laugh in the tie-breaker.
In another match, Our Lady of Perpetual Convent High School, Cortalim overcome St Xavier Institute High School, Curtorim 1-0. The all-important goal was scored by Oscar D’Costa.
On Thursday, Fr Agnel Multipurpose High School, Verna and St Anthony’s High School, Majorda registered victories.
Fr Agnel prevailed over Our Lady of Snow’s High School, Raia 6-3 via tie-breaker after both the teams were tied 3-3 at full time.
Fr Agnel broke the deadlock in the very 8th minute when Leonard Almeida slotted past the rival goalkeeper with snap shot. Suraj Bahadur doubled the lead in the 34th minute.
Post resumption, Our Lady of Snow put up a better display. Godfrey Rodrigues reduced the deficit in the 42nd minute. Unfazed, Fr Agnel intensified their attacks with Xavier Colaco scoring the third. With time running out, Our Lady of Snow went all out and Rolland Vaz struck twice in the 48th and 62nd minutes to put his team on equal terms.
In the penalty shoot out, Suraj Bahadur, Lenin D’Mello and Rizlon Fernandes were on target for Fr Agnel while none converted from Our Lady of Snow.
St Anthony thrashed Regina Mundi High School, Vasco 4-0. The winners led 3-0 at half time.
St Anthony dominated the game and pushed their opponents on the back foot throughout the match. Macanzie Fernandes drew the first blood in the very 2nd minute.
Spurred by the success, St Anthony raised the tempo and Neuton Fernandes inflated the tally in the 20th minute. Macanzie, who was instrumental in demolishing the rival defence struck second in the 30th minute to give his team 3-0 cushion.
The second half did not bring any relief to the opponents as they attacked from both the flanks. Wendel Colaco drove the last nail into rival coffin late in the second half.
