Jugador de Priar defeated Beach Boyz 4-3 in the first 5-a-side street football tournament organised by Sofla Boys at Taleigao on Sunday.
A part of the road near Ideal HS was blocked to incorporate this exciting style of football which is popular in Brazil. Loudspeakers were playing the waka waka song to create a carnival experience while some players played barefoot enthralling the onlookers while vehicles halted to watch the event.
Organiser Gavin Araujo speaking to Herald said, “This is a fast paced game which requires a good deal of skill to win. Players such as Ronaldo, Ronaldinho and Robinho were brought up playing this style of football on the streets of Brazil.”
Gavin is hoping that street football catches on in Goa as you do not need any expensive equipment to play – just a ball and a set of handball goalposts. The game can be played all year round as the surface is made of concrete unlike grass pitches.
