MAPUSA: Young lads of Progress High School, Sanquelim came back transformed in the second session to dictate their authority over Government Higher Secondary School, Sanquelim 5-1 and emerge champions of under-17 boys Bicholim Taluka Subroto Mukerjee inter-school football tournament organized by Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs, at Sesa Football Academy ground, Sirsaim, on Monday. The teams were locked goalless at half time.
Lionel D’Souza and Ashley Cardozo scored a brace each while Vignesh Shetgaonkar was the other scorer for the winners.
Veegan Ferrao converted a delightful free-kick to reduce the margin for Government HSS, making it 2-1 but their rivals did not lose focus.
The teams mostly comprised of players from Sesa FA, went head-to-head in the first session.
However, Progress started the second session with a renewed sense of purpose and broke the deadlock when Ashley nodded in from close range.
Soon, Lionel was inspired and the latter fired home from 20-yard, giving no chance to the rival keeper.
However, Veegan’s well-executed free-kick did give Government HSS a glimpse of hope but their opponents regrouped and scored at will, thereafter.
Ashley scored another close ranger for his second of the evening while Lionel worked his skills past two rival defenders to make it 4-1.
In the final stages, Vignesh found the mark. They could have had another but Glevito Miranda’s scorching effort kissed the crossbar.
Progress HS have now scored 23 goals in just three matches, conceding just one goal in their blazing run.
