SINQUETIM-NAVELIM: Quepem Zone shot-out Ilhas Zone 5-2, via the tie-breaker to win the GVFC’S Veterans football tournament final, at Rosary Church ground, Navelim on Sunday.
Quepem took an early lead in the fourth minute when Teofilo Dias played a through ball to Rosario Carvalho who played a pass to Arthur Mascarenhas who tapped the ball into the open net.
This was a wake-up call for Ilhas, who soon regrouped and with Pratap Sawant controlling the midfield, Ilhas controlled the pace of the match, and in the 17th minute Pascoal Pereira controlled the ball and passed the ball to Neville de Araujo who beat Anil under the Quepem bar to tie the score 1-1.
At half-time the score was tied at 1-1.
Alvito D’Cunha and Teofilo Dias were outstanding for Quepem and were a constant threat to Ilhas.
Vincent Colaco was rock solid in Quepem defence and did not allow any space for Ilhas forwards.
In the second half, the ball was mostly confined to the midfield.
Rosario Carvalho nearly won it for Quepem in the injury time but Anant Adkonkar in Ilhas goal brought of an excellent save.
In the tie-breaker, Teofilo Dias, Alvito D’Cunha, Vincent Colaco and Raymond D’Souza were successful for Quepem while only Anant Adkonkar was successful for Ilhas.
Albert Pinheiro, Former Asst. Commissioner of Customs & Central Excise was the chief guest and gave away the prizes to the winners and runners-up in the presence of Mauricio Alfonso, ex-International player, Brahmanand Shankhwalkar, Arjuna awardee and Gokuldas Nagvenkar AIFF Referees instructor and other dignitaries.
