MAPUSA: Quitula Sports Club got the better of Sinquerim Sports Club 5-3 in the Bardez Zone GFA’s 3rd Division League match at Quitula ground, Aldona, Tuesday.
Quitula led 4-2 at half time.
Quitula started off attackingly on the flanks and opened the scoring in the fourth minute when Edison Fernandes positioned himself perfectly to tap in a cross past Sinquerim keeper Supraj Tari.
Eight minutes later, the home team doubled their advantage after Cliff Fernandes skilfully rounded off the rival custodian.
However, Sinquerim did not lose hope and continued to fight back. Their hard work paid off when Prabhakar Maulinkar scored from close range in the 24th minute and minutes later, Narayan Salgaonkar converted a penalty to restore parity.
As the match became frantic, Quitula’s Sairaj Halankar scored a gem of a goal when he cleverly chipped over onrushing Supraj.
Just before the break, Quitula made it 4-2. Sairaj took a dangerous free-kick and goalkeeper Supraj fumbled in his collection as the ball fell to Aldo Fernandes, who finished with a half volley.
Changing over, Sinquerim played good short passes and created good opening but their strikers lacked firepower. At the other end, Quitla left-winger Cliff registered his brace with an easy tap in off a cross from the left by Neville Rodrigues.
With three minutes to go for the final whistle, Gopal Mandrekar reduced the margin for Sinquerim.
