PANJIM: The Sports Authority of India assured India is poised to notch a rich haul of medals at the next year’s Tokyo Olympics.
Addressing parents and students at a school function, Roque Dias, Executive Director of SAI exhorted students to resort to yoga to improve their inner personality and self-discipline, citing an instance of how yoga helped boost excellence in sports at national level.
“As on date, India got 29 quotas for 2020 Olympics, Tokyo after taking part in International competitions, with 15 from shooting discipline alone. This has been attributed to introduction of yoga for shooting discipline and the pioneering scheme prepared at the behest of Desh Deepak Verma, IAS, DG SAI, who asked me to prepare a scheme for Juniors for continues training of sportsmen/women for 8-10 years, and to head the Division, in the year 2011,”said Roque.
“We are seeing the result today,” he said and pointed out that the scheme was approved by Sports Federations, eminent sportspersons and others, which is one of the primary factors for the quantum jump in achieving excellence in sports.
As a result of this scheme, athletes notched 186 medals in the Jr. International events in the third year after the scheme was launched.
