PANJIM: Salgaonkar CC emerged champions of the 3rd Late Babu Naik All India Tournament played at Fatorda, on Sunday.
Salgaonkars defeated Dempo by 31 runs in a close encounter. Batting first, Salgaonkars posted 324/8 in stipulated 42 overs.
Amogh Desai (105) scored a brilliant hundred, second of this tournament with Swapnil Asnodkar (69), Vishant More (43*) and Swapnil Salvi (29) supporting Amogh well. For Dempo, Darshan Misal (2-26) and Rakesh Prabhu (2-88) bowled well. Subodh Bhati and Robin D’souza took a wicket each.
Chasing 325 was never easy for Dempo but Robin D’souza (58) and Saurabh Dubey (59) shared a hundred run partnership for 7th wicket and it looked Dempo would go par the Salgaonkar score but they departed in quick succession and Dempo were all out for 293 in 40 overs falling short of 31 runs.
Sumiran Amonkar (33), Akshay Jhambekar (34), Darshan Misal (38) and Saurabh Bandekar (26) batted well for Dempo but in vain. Amogh Desai came to rescue again but with the ball with (3-28). Sherbahadur Yadav took 2 wickets.
Amogh Dessai of Salgaonkar CC was declared man-of-the-match and man-of-the-series. Kuldeep Diwan of BSNL was the best bowler of the tournament and Swapnil Salvi of Salgaonkar CC was awarded the best batsman of the tournament.
Prizes were given at the hands of Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar, TCP minister Vijay Sardessai, Gaurish Naik of A. N. Foundation and Secretary, Margao Cricket Academy Hemant Angle.
