Sporting Club of Davorlim defeated Curtorim Gymkhana 1-0 to emerge champions of the 3rd Curtorim Villagers Cup inter-village football tournament organised by Curtorim Gymkhana in the final at Curtorim ground, on Sunday. Sony Colaco scored the all-important goal.
Davorlim outplayed their opponents with neat tackles while Curtorim stood on the back foot throughout.
Davorlim struck the match winner in the fifth minute, following a through pass by Melwyn Fernandes from the flanks. Seeing Curtorim defenders fumble, a lurking Sony made no mistake in beating the Curtorim keeper.
Curtorim tried their best to neutralize the lead but could not break down the resilient Davorlim defense.
Crossing over, Curtorim piled on tremendous pressure on their rivals and nearly found the equaliser but substitute John Fernandes was the worst culprit as he muffled a sitter with only the rival keeper at his mercy, after he received a pass from Jessel Carneiro.
Davorlim would have doubled the lead midway in the second half, had veteran Jose Colaco’s pile driver not been blocked by the Curtorim custodian.
Davorlim were richer by Rs 25,000 while Curtorim had to settle for Rs 20,000.
Following individual prizes were awarded: Best half – Roy Albuquerque (Curtorim Gymkhana). First scorer of the finals – Sony Gomes (SC of Davorlim). Best defender – Bonnie Niasso (SC of Davorlim). Best goalkeeper – Sachin (SC of Davorlim). Best forward – Paxton Gomes (SC of Davorlim). Best player of the finals – Jessel Carneiro (Curtorim Gymkhana).
MP Francisco Sardinha was the chief guest and gave away the prizes. Fr Livio De Mello, parish priest, St Alex Church, Curtorim was the guest of honour. Milagres Rodrigues, former sarpanch, Curtorim presided. Manuel Fernandes, secretary proposed the vote of thanks.
