Sporting Club Davorlim march into finals

MARGAO: Strong contenders Sporting Club Davorlim thumped CAC Cansaulim 3-1 to storm into the finals of the V M Salgaocar memorial invitational inter village football tournament organised by Prime SC, in association with Margao SC, and played at St John Baptist grounds Dando, Benaulim.

Davorlim were favourites to go through and the winners raced to a three goal lead with goals from the boots of Royson Colaco and a fine brace from striker Reeve D’Costa. Hardworking midfielder Rahul Manganevar netted for Cansaulim but it was just a consolation for the losers.

Nothing went right for Cansaulim and the coastal team fell behind within three minutes of the start. Davorlim right winger Clifton Rebello sent a neat cross which eluded the rival defenders for striker Royson Colaco to volley past Anish Naik in the Cansaulim goal. The young Cansaulim side were deeply rattled by the early setback and right back Melwyn Gama struck out his leg to deflect a William Niasso goal bound shot with Anish beaten to avert further damage.

The marauding Davorlim team struck the second when right back Ali Khan with sheer speed burst into the danger zone and sent in a superb cross for Reeve D’Costa to put a simple header into the net in the 17th minute. Cansaulim despite the efforts of midfielder Aaron Fernandes and winger Asher Correia were unable to get into a rhythm.

After the resumption, Cansaulim twice came close in reducing the margin but Elvino Fernandes shot struck the post and went out in the 42nd minute. Soon thereafter Selwyn Soares’ header settled on the roof of the net to the dismay of their supporters. Davorlim soaked up the pressure and took the match beyond the reach of their rivals when William Niasso dribbling past a few players on the left put the ball on a platter for striker Reeve D’ Costa to tap home for the third in the 55th minute.

Cansaulim finally managed to reduce the margin two minutes before the close with lanky midfielder Rahul scoring from close range, after a delightful pass by veteran defender Baptist D’Melo.
