MARGAO: St Anthony Sports Club, Colva prevailed over St Rock Youth Club, Calata-Majorda 3-2 via the tie-breaker to emerge champions of all-Goa 13th Chinchinim-Deussua Village Panchayat Cup football tournament organized by CRC, Chinchinim, at church ground, Chinchinim, on Sunday. The teams were locked goalless at the end of regulation period.
The heavy rains made it difficult for the teams to get into a rhythm.
Neither team could hold on to the ball form long periods and lost possession easily.
Midway, St Anthony had a chance but Johnson Quadros’ rasping shot was well blocked by the Majorda goalkeeper.
St Rock too created openings but they were easily dealt by rival goalkeeper Espee D’Silva, fisting away Clinton Fernandes’ effort on one occasion.
Post resumption, the trend continued in same vein with the teams adopting a defensive approach.
In the tie-breaker, David D’Costa, Maxson Fernandes and Johnson Quadros were on target for St Anthony while Bouventura Pacheco and Clinton Fernandes converted for St Rock.
St Antony were richer by Rs 30,000 and were awarded the winner’s trophy while St Rock had to settle for Rs 20,000 and the runners-up trophy.
Individual prizes were awarded to Best Goalkeeper of the final Espee D’Silva of St Anthony, Best Defender of the final Josley Dias of St Anthony, Best forward of the final Clinton Fernandes of St Rock, Best disciplined team Guardian Angel SC, Curchorem, Most promising player of the tournament Ashley Rodrigues of Clube Sao Miguel de Taleigao, Best defender Vincy Fernandes of United Club of Benaulim and Best forward Ryan Fernandes of CRC, Chinchinim.
South Goa Collector and District Magistrate, Venancio Furtado was the chief guest and gave away the prizes in the presence of Fr Jose Antonio da Costa, parish priest of Our Lady of Hope church, Chinchinim; Constancio Fernandes, sarpanch Village Panchayat Chinchinim-Deussua and other dignitaries.
Earlier, Michael Benny Da Costa, organizing committee chairman welcomed. Valentino Baretto, treasurer of CRC, proposed the vote of thanks. Seby Soares compered. In all, 16 teams participated.
