CAVELOSSIM: St.Anthony SC Assolda downed Curtorim Gymkhana 2-0 to enter the last eight of Cavelossim Villagers UK CUP inter-village football tournament, organised by Santa Cruz Club of Cavelossim, at Fr Druston and Wellington ground, Cavelossim, on Sunday.
In the fifth minute, Assolda’s Socorro Fernandes’ rasping shot was well saved by agile Curtorim keeper Prakash Joshi.
In the second half, Assolda kept pushing for the lead moving more men in attack which paid dividends when in the 63rd minute Valente Fernandes’ floated the ball in the penalty area for Velson Fernandes to head the ball in the right corner of the goal to give Assolda the lead.
Curtorim fought back when skipper Manuel gave a pass to Allan Peixoto who was tripped by Jerry in the penalty area with referee Rozabir pointing to spot but as Assolda players protested, he consulted his assistant Amiro and awarded a free-kick on the edge of the penalty area which was well taken by Mario Mascarenhas but keeper Alwyn Faria rose to the occasion to punch the ball out and deny Curtorim the equaliser.
Towards the end Valentino scored a goal assisted by Faiden Pereira to put an end to Curtorim ‘s hopes and ensure a hard fought victory for Assolda.
