BENAULIM: St Anthony SC, Assolda edged past St Anthony SC, Colva 7-6 via tie-breaker in the final to clinch 40th Cana-Benaulim Panchayat Cup, at the Sao Joao de Baptist ground, Dando-Benaulim, on Sunday. At the lemon break, both the teams failed to open an account.
The first chance fell for the home side with Romario Fernandes shooting wide in the very fourth minute.
Benson Fernandes of Assolda ran down the right and cleared the rival defence to pass the ball to Alton Vaz, but the latter’s shot went over the cross bar in the 9th minute.
Crossing over, the teams tried to score the match winners but failed to end the regulation time with goalless draw.
In the resultant tie-breaker, St Anthony SC, Assolda netted through Benson Fernandes, Joseph Fernandes, Sunny Fernandes, Julian Fernandes, Alton Vaz, Kevin Vaz and Kary Vaz while St Anthony SC, Colva were on target with the efforts of Romario Fernandes, Joseph Fernandes, Dylan Fernandes, Rony Fernandes, Joshua Pereira and Maxon Fernandes.
Fr Lucio Dias was the chief guest and gave away the prizes to the winners and runners-up in the presence of Benaulim Constituency MLA Caitano D’Silva, Camilson Fernandes, Liberata Rebello, Remy Fernandes and Patrick Dourado.
The winners took home Rs 50,000 plus trophy while runners-up were awarded Rs 40, 000 plus trophy.
Individual prizes awarded were: Best defender and best player of final Succoro Fernandes, best striker Sunny Fernandes (both St Anthony SC, Assolda); best goalkeeper Denzil Dias, best half Jostan Pereira and first goal Roshan Fernandes (all St Anthony SC, Colva).
