BENAULIM: St. Anthony’s Club, Colva edged past an unlucky St. Anthony SC, Assolda 3-1 via the tie-breaker to lift the glittering 34th Striker Trophy organised by Young Strikers, Benaulim, at Dando ground, Benaulim.
In a tantalizing match, which Assolda should have won comfortably in the regulation period but ultimately the Colva outfit rode their luck to emerge triumphant in the penalty shoot-out
Assolda could have got the opening goal inside the first quarter but striker Vitorino Fernandes’ shot struck the post and went out. Colva were chasing shadows throughout the match but Assolda ran out of luck as efforts of Sunny Fernandes, Erfan Edward and Vitorino Fernandes came off the woodwork on five occasions to the utter frustration of the Assolda supporters.
In the tie-breaker, St Anthony, Colva were successful through Maxon Fernandes, Balla Hilario and Kabir Khan while Myron Fernandes was the lone scorer for Assolda.
St Anthony Colva were awarded Rs 40,000 and a trophy while St Anthony Assolda had to settle for Rs. 30,000 and a trophy.
MLA Benaulim Constituency Churchill Alemao was the chief guest and gave away the prizes in the presence of Diella Fernandes, Menino de Bandar, Anthony Mam fernandes, Xavier Pereira, Anthony Pango, John D’Silva, Cosme Oliveira, Custodio Fernandes and other dignitaries.
