PANJIM: St Xavier’s Higher Secondary School, Mapusa defeated St Michael’s Higher Secondary School, Taleigao 2-1, to win the North District U-17 boys Subroto Mukherjee football tournament, organised by Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs, at Quitula ground, on Wednesday.
It was Aditya Salgaonkar who opened the account for the St Xavier’s team in the first half. St Michael’s HSS regrouped and played possession play before they made it all square through Naseem Mohammad just before the lemon break.
Crossing over, the teams started the match on equal footing. But as the match progressed St Xavier’s gained momentum in the later stages of the game and managed to score the all-important goal through Josely D’Souza which.
The State final will be played on August 30 between the North and South District winners.
