PANJIM: The State is confident of a good performance at the beach volleyball event at Nationals Games and the Asian Beach Championship. Surya Sawant the coach who is a FIBB level1 and SAG coach said the two teams comprised experienced players who had played in several tournaments and had gathered adequate experience to face the challenges that would come their way.
A training camp which commenced on Sept 5 is expected to hone the skills and this camp will end on October 2.
Both the teams have qualified for the National Games which will be held in Surat, Gujarat and one team will go to Thailand for the championship which will be held from September 27.
Speaking to the coach during a training session at Miramar beach Surya said he was very confident of winning medals. “For two years there was no competition due to the virus. They are prepared now. I hope everyone supports the players and wish them all the best. I would like the Sports Minister to include this sport in the school games. This will ensure there is greater participation which will then ensure a continuous flow of players at the State level who can then participate in tournaments.” he said.
Rama Dhawaskar from Bicholim who is one of the players said because of the National games, preparations were in full swing and they were practising in the morning, afternoon and evening. Rama said, “We are being pushed very hard by our coach who is directing us. He is showing us all the techniques and how to consider the direction of the wind, sun and the rain and how one can play in such conditions. Earlier, we had won a bronze medal and the last time we won silver and bronze. This year we are focused on winning the gold. Our training is focused on winning medals in both the championships.”
