MARGAO: Sun Moon Veterans defeated Signal Veterans, Guirdolim 1-0 to move into the quarter-final of the 2nd Assolda Veterans football tournament, played at Padribhat, Sao Jose de Areal, ground, on Tuesday.
Signal Veterans, Guirdolim had the first chance of the match in the second minute when Lino Fernandes on collecting the ball from Rajesh Zawdekar, made a fine run down the left flank, but was tackled on time by Inacio Afonso.
In the sixth minute, Inacio Afonso once again came to his team’s rescue when he cleared Marcus Gomes’ header off the goal line.
Vincy Antao, striker of Sun Moon, combined with Camilo Monteiro but Vincys shot from inside the box went inches wide in the 12th minute.
Yet another best chance fell to Sun Moon when Hanuman Pednekar played the ball to Ivan Coutinho, whose right footed effort went inches wide in the 38th minute.
Vincy Antao of Sun Moon crossed in an aerial ball to Camilo Monteiro, who leapt highest to meet the ball but to his dismay his header hit the rival cross piece and went out of play in the 56th minute.
Sun Moon Veterans will meet Assolda Veterans in the quarter-finals on April 1.
