Suryakumar Yadav’s international career may not be over just yet. Despite being removed as India’s T20I captain and subsequently dropped from the squads for the tours of Ireland and England, the experienced batter remains in contention for a national team comeback, provided he delivers consistent performances in domestic cricket.
According to a report by ANI, a Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) source confirmed that the selectors have not completely shut the door on the 35-year-old. While Suryakumar is not currently part of India’s plans, impressive displays in domestic tournaments could put him back in the reckoning.

“Doors for Suryakumar Yadav are still open. He is not currently in the scheme of things, but he remains eligible to come back if he scores runs in domestic cricket consistently,” a BCCI source was quoted as saying.
The statement comes just months after Suryakumar captained India to the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 title, making his exclusion from subsequent squads a talking point. His removal from the leadership role and omission from the team surprised many, especially considering his success in guiding India to a global trophy.
Since Shreyas Iyer took over the captaincy, India have struggled in the shortest format. The team suffered a 2-0 series defeat in Ireland before enduring a disappointing 4-0 loss to England, with one match abandoned due to rain. The results have raised questions about India’s transition under the new leadership.
India are next scheduled to tour Zimbabwe following the ODI series in England, where several young players are expected to get opportunities. However, if the experiment fails to produce the desired results, the selectors could reconsider experienced campaigners like Suryakumar.
A strong performance in the upcoming Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy could prove crucial for the Mumbai batter. Suryakumar has already enjoyed an impressive year, scoring 484 runs in 14 T20 matches at an average of 44 while maintaining a strike rate of over 161. His tally also includes four half-centuries, underlining his continued effectiveness in the format.
Former India off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has also backed the possibility of a comeback. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ashwin said that while reclaiming the captaincy may be difficult, returning purely as a batter remains a realistic prospect if Suryakumar performs well in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and follows it up with another successful IPL season.
Suryakumar’s overall T20I record further strengthens his case. In 113 appearances for India, he has amassed 3,272 runs at an average of 36, including four centuries and 25 half-centuries. Widely regarded as one of the most destructive T20 batters in world cricket, the right-hander could yet force his way back into India’s plans with consistent performances on the domestic circuit.
