UC Verna move into quarters

RAIA: United Club of Verna edged past Navelim Sporting Club 7-6 via tie-breaker to move into the quarter-finals of 49th Chandor Seamen football tournament played at Chandor ground, on Thursday.

Both teams showed good footballing skills in front of huge spectators.

Ronaldo Pereira of Navelim Sporting Club and Clive Fernandes of United Club of Verna gave their best to their respective teams.

Clive took a long ranger in the 12th minute but missed the target by whiskers. Then Velington Almeida of Navelim Sporting Club’s power-packed shot went over the crossbar of United Club of Verna.

Ronaldo and Clive tried their best to make inroads to score goals but both team’s defence wall guarded their fortress and no goal was scored till half time.

A tricky move by Clifton Rebello of United Club of Verna should have netted but his shot was denied by Navelim Sporting Club post in the 40th minute. Then Ronaldo’s shot went over the crossbar of United Club of Verna.

Soon a foxy move by Ronaldo’s solo effort, the power-packed shot hit the United Club of Verna goalpost and went out of play in the 50th minute.

At the end of regulation time, both the teams failed to open an account.

In the resultant tie-breaker, United Club of Verna proved to be the better shooters.
