PANJIM: Hosts Vagator Parish Youth Sports Club fought gallantly to register a solitary goal victory over Candolim Sports Club to move into the quarter-finals of Mc Dowell No. 1 Yaari Premier Cup, at Ozran ground, Vagator, on Tuesday.
In the eighth minute, Nitesh Salgaocar set up Lester Albuquerque right inside the 18-yard box but the latter’s shot was blocked by Candolim stopper back Anthony Duarte.
Minutes later, Shekar Kerkar sent a through pass to Aniket Dabolkar, whose goal-bound shot was saved by the Candolim keeper.
On crossing ends, Candolim’s medio Jolief Simoes did the spadework for Bapu Pednekar, who failed to score from hand-shaking distance to the dismay of his teammates.
When it looked the teams were heading for the penalty shootout, Shekar Kerkar getting hold on to a pass from Sameer Govekar scored with a neat placement, 1-0.
In the closing stages of the match, Candolim went all-out in search of the equalizer but the last line of Vagator defense held to their one goal lead till the final hooter.
