MAPUSA: Vagator Parish Youth Sports Club struggled before squeezing past Holy Cross, Arambol 2-1 in the fourth round match of the GFA’s 2nd Division League at Duler Stadium, here, on Wednesday.
Both the sides went into the breather with a 1-1 draw. Today’s victory ensured Vagator PYSC continue their reign on the top of the league table with 10 points while Holy Cross, Arambol have seven points.
It was HC Arambol who broke the deadlock in the 4th minute of play when Amit Fernandes sent a pinpoint cross to Anand Gad, who got the better of Vagator PYSC keeper Soma Korgaokar and slotted the ball home.
Vagator PYSC managed to level terms minutes before the half time whistle when Jesmon Carvalho’s well executed 25-yard freekick curled its way into the HC Arambol nets, 1-1.
On resumption of play, Vagator PYSC almost made it 2-1 in the 65th minute of play. However, HC Arambol defender Simon Fernandes came with a fine clearance to thwart Omkar Satelkar from doing any damage.
In the 83rd minute, Vagator PYSC scored the all-important goal when Omkar got hold of Stepelton Fernandes right inside the danger zone and coolly tapped the ball home, 2-1.
It was surprising to note that both the teams reported for the match with same colour playing jerseys (green). HC Arambol being the away team were supposed to carry another set of jersey, however they failed to do so.
With the intervention of the match commissioner Shanker Kalangutkar and sporting spirit from Vagator PYSC team, the match was played with HC Arambol playing with GFA’s bibs on top of their jersey.
