DANDO-BENAULIM: Varca Sports Club edged past a fighting CAC Cansaulim 7-5 via the tie-breaker to enter the quarter-finals of the 11th Cana Benaulim Panchayat Cup soccer tournament organised by United Club Benaulim, at St John The Baptist ground, Dando-Benaulim, on Tuesday.
Varca made a forceful start with medio Nash Pereira controlling the midfield. Varca deservingly took the lead on the 15th minute when Nash Pereira drew out Cansaulim goalkeeper Aniston Fernandes and pushed the ball to striker Joeburn Cardozo to slot into the empty net.
Cansaulim regrouped quickly with Domnic Soares finding Ashley Soares to slam past Varca goalkeeper Mohamed Shaikh to notch the equaliser. Cansaulim tormented the rival defence and striker Agnelo D’Souza put his team ahead on the stroke of lemon break with a close range finish.
After resumption, it took Varca just five minutes to get the score back on level terms when substitute Joylon Cardozo slamming home with his first touch.
In the tie-breaker, Varca netted through Joylan Cardozo, Jobern Cardozo, Daylan Lima, Nash Pereira and Mohamad Shaikh while Prasad Bagli, Chadwick Furtado and Assumption Soares scored for Cansaulim.
Earlier, chief guest Diella Pereira, Sarpanch inaugurated the tournament in the presence of Menino de Bandar, Xavier Pereira, Anthony Leo Fernandes, Jaju Fernandes and Franky Fernandes.
