PANJIM: The Perpetual Convent High School, Navelim, clinched the Independence Cup – 1st All-Goa Inter-School U-17 football tournament organised by Verna Sports Club, at Verna church ground, on Thursday.
In the final, Perpetual Convent High School defeated Mae dos Pobres High School, Nuvem, 3-0. The scoreline was 1-0 at half time. Vernon Cardozo scored a hat-trick for Perpetual Convent High School.
Chief guest former India head coach Savio Madeira, guest of honour India Assistant Coach Mahesh Gawali in the presence of former Betalbatim deputy sarpanch Viola Pacheco, Holy Cross Church, Verna, Assistant Parish Priest Fr Royal Raposo, Verna Sports Club President Sancen Fernandes gave away the prizes to the winners and runners-up. The winners took home Rs 25,000, while the runners-up Rs 15,000.
Viola Pacheco, social Worker and former Betalbatim deputy sarpach, gave away the individual medals to the winners and runners-up.
Earlier, in the girls exhibition match, Verna Sports Club downed Carmel College 3-0. Valanka, Swellen and Agima scored a goal each for the winners.
Fr Royal presented the medals along with trophies to the winners and runners-up. Later, Verna Sports Club President Sancen Fernandes proposed a vote of thanks.
