NIO scientists to be honoured.

PANJIM: Three senior National Institute Oceanography (NIO) scientists have been honoured with Union Mines Ministries ‘National Geoscience Award 2010’ for their claim to extend India’s present limit of the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).

G C Bhattacharya, Dr K S Krishna and Dr A K Chaubey are amongst the nine scientists who were awarded with this prestigious award for their extraordinary contribution in the field of marine science. The award consists of a cash prize of Rs 2 lakh.

The three-member team has been awarded for their contribution for ‘Delineation of outer limits of extended continental shelf of India’.

“This important work has helped India in providing the science behind India’s claim to extend its present limit of the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), the marine area over which India enjoys special rights for exploration and exploitation,” NIO press note reads adding that the present area is 2 million sq km. 

The research was carried out under the Ministry of Earth-Sciences (MoES), Government of India initiated program for delineation of the outer limits of India’s continental shelf.

On August 16, 2010, India led by Chaubey made a formal presentation in this regard to the Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf at the United Nations (UN), New York

It was joint initiative of NIO, laboratories of the Council of Scientific & Industrial Research, India and National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI), who are also been honoured with the award. 

The Ministry of Mines, Government of India had initiated a ‘National Mineral Awards’ scheme in 1966, which was later expanded and changed to National Geoscience Award (NGA) in 2009.

The objective of the scheme is to honour individuals and teams of scientists for their extraordinary achievements and outstanding contributions in the field of fundamental/ applied geosciences, mining and allied areas to provide incentive for striving toward excellence.
