Police martyrs remembered

PANJIM: The Goa police paid tributes to martyrs from among police and paramilitary forces on Police Commemoration Day at police headquarters, Panjim on Monday.

Governor BV Wanchoo attended the parade as a retired police officer (of the 1976-IPS batch) and placed a wreath at the police memorial. Senior police officers were also present.
The day is observed in memory of Central Police Reserve Force (CRPF) jawans who laid down their lives while fighting the Chinese insurgents in Ladakh. Every year, on October 21, commemoration parades are held in all police units as a mark of respect to the brave police martyrs, who sacrificed their lives in the line of duty. 578 police and paramilitary personnel from across the country killed in action over the past one year between September 1, 2012 and August 31, 2013.
Director General of Goa Police, Kishan Kumar, who paid tributes to the martyrs at the memorial, said that the history of commemoration day goes back to October 21, 1959, when a patrol party of CRPF, led by SI Karam Singh, was ambushed by the Chinese forces at Hot Springs Ladakh and 10 jawans were killed. He also read out the names of all the 578 police personnel who died on duty during the past one year.
DIGs, Superintendents of Police, Representatives of Home Guards and Civil Defence and other members of Goa Police placed wreaths at the police memorial.
