Benaulim VP has not failed on garbage front: Sarpanch
HERALD REPORTER
MARGAO, DEC 7
Benaulim Sarpanch Carmelina Fernandes has said there is no question of any failure on the part of the panchayat on the garbage front and asserted that it is for the courts to decide whether there is any failure or success on the garbage front.
Reacting to the dumping of garbage collected by residents near the panchayat ghar on Monday, the Sarpanch said the Colva police would be investigating from where the waste was collected and how the persons could produce tons of waste overnight.
Welcoming the statement made by Ciriaco Barretto that garbage is not just a problem in the village, but a big menace, Carmelina said she would induct Barreto and other persons involved in the garbage collection in the garbage committee to see how successful and interested they are to suggest the garbage disposal site which has been recently rejected by the Goa Pollution Control Board.
She, however, sought to know why Baretto did not intimate the Panchayat if the garbage was lying along road side all these day, adding that Benaulim people are vigilant and always inform the panchayat if there is any garbage around.
On the statement made by Seby Fernandes warning that the situation would out of hand if things are not controlled now, the Sarpanch said this only show what his intention are and sought to know whether this is the language to threaten the Panchayat.
“Information provided vide letter dated 10/06/2010 under Right to Information on which issue is made is incorrect, without proper knowledge and has been issued without checking the records of the Panchayat and conducting inquiry with the Panchayat Body by Senior clerk Avelina in charge of all office records and secretary Deepak Chari’, she said, adding that the Senior clerk and secretary should have asked the body if there were no documents.
“When the garbage was dumped outside the panchayat, the secretary and senior clerk without permission of deputy sarpanch has conveniently put the same inside the panchayat room. This shows that the Secretary and  Senior clerk Avelina in charge of all office records have acted in collusion to deliberately cause the present confusion”, she added.
