MARGAO: Police stations across the state will now be required to keep their surrounding ~ within a radius of 200 meters ~ plastic free.
After inaugurating the Cavelossim police outpost at Cavelossim on Saturday in the presence of Fisheries Minister Avertano Furtado and Benaulim MLA Caitu Silva, the Chief Minister further announced that the government would soon carry out plastic collection drives along major district roads like the highways.
“The government has seriously taken up the task of making the state plastic free. The drives on the highways are just a beginning. Other roads will soon be added to the list,” he said, adding that police stations will be mandated to keep their surroundings plastic free.
The chief minister blamed the previous Congress government for dilly-dallying on the recruitment of police manpower and promotions of the existing staff. “For the last three years, there have been no major recruitment and promotions. As a result, the state is facing a police personnel shortage,” he said, while promising to tide over the shortage by Christmas.
He promised to deploy a police officer of the rank of Police Sub-Inspector to man the Cavelossim police outpost before Christmas.
In his address, Benaulim MLA Caitu Silva appealed to the Chief Minister to deploy additional manpower at the Colva police station having jurisdiction over entire coastal Salcete. “The Colva police station is presently manned by a lone PSI though the police has jurisdiction over entire Salcete coastal belt,” he said.
In his address, DIG Kishan Kumar said the police department has received overwhelming support from the government to meet its increasing requirements.
