MARGAO: Incessant rain since Tuesday night has caused flooding in several government offices in Margao. The offices of agriculture, comunidade and cooperative societies were in knee deep water on Wednesday.
Leaking water in the comunidade building resulted in water logging of the offices in the building on the ground floor and caused severe inconvenience to the functioning of the offices. When visited the Communidade, water leakage from the roof could be seen all over the office. The employees had left their tables and were seen standing outside the office.
Camilo Barretto of the Save Golden Goa NGO said, “The condition of Comunidade building has gone from bad to worse. Water is filled and the electrical fixtures have also got dampened. The building can collapse any moment, but the government has not paid any attention to this.”
“This is a danger not just to the employees, but also to the people visiting the office. This office has records of 90 comunidades of South Goa and if the documents are destroyed, then, we won’t even know how many comunidades are there,” warned Camilo.
Sriram Raiturkar, an RTI activist, said, “May be they are letting the records get destroyed on purpose, so that there is no evidence of land records left.”
“The municipality has declared this building as unsafe and they have not done anything to improve its condition,” complained Camilo.
Meanwhile, the office of agriculture was in a similar condition as that of the comunidades. The office of the zonal agricultural officer was full of buckets to save the files from the dripping water.
The employees informed that they drained water several times since morning and resumed work. The leaking water has also dampened the cupboards and files.
Similarly the office of the cooperative societies housed in the Vidya Niketan building was also flooded in the incessant rains.
