MARGAO: Those who were out to browbeat the two Margao Councillors with disqualification threats after the Margao Police registered cases against them in the Costa ground imbroglio may come in for a rude shock.
Even Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar has maintained that one cannot face disqualification just because of the registration of a case. In fact, Parrikar has sought to know the ground on which the Director of Municipal Administration can disqualify the two Councillors even if a petition is filed against the duo. “This is sheer madness. You cannot disqualify a councillor just because a case is registered against him,” he asserted.
The Chief Minister’s stand should come as a solace to the two Councillors Avinash Shirodkar and Damu Shirodkar, against whom the Margao police had registered cases along with 23 other persons.
Even Margao Municipal Chief Officer Deepali Naik had told the media that she has requested the Margao police to provide details on the cases registered against the two councillors. Councillor Avinash Shirodkar said that that certain vested interests were trying to take advantage of the police case.
