MARGAO: The daily waste collection in the commercial capital has been affected following the breakdown of five of the seven rickshaws, which are lying in the Margao Municipal Council-owned garage in the Old Market.
According to the municipal sources, these five garbage collection rickshaws are lying idle in the garbage due to the breakdown for the past several days. However, there appears to be no seriousness on the part of the concerned officer to get these rickshaws repaired.
The breakdown of these vehicles has affected the garbage collection as waste is found lying unattended at several places in the town.
“Of seven rickshaws, two or three are in working condition. We have already informed about the same to the supervisor and the concerned officer,” said a worker. He said it is very difficult to carry out garbage collection with only two rickshaws.
MMC chairperson Lyndon Pereira said the breakdown of garbage collection rickshaws is due to the battery problem. “The concerned officer has informed me that batteries of all these five rickshaws need to be replaced,” he said.
He admitted that garbage collection has been hampered due to the breakdown of the rickshaws for the past several days. “I have asked the engineer to move the proposal to purchase the batteries at the earliest,” the chairperson said. However, it is shocking that the issues with regards to MMC vehicles are not brought to the notice of the chairperson/chief officer on time.
