NGT orders demolition of guest house in Sernabatim

MARGAO: After a year of arguments, the National Green Tribunal (NGT) ordered the demolition of all structures of Furtados Guest House in Sernabatim-Colva. A fine of Rs 50,000 was also imposed on the violators.

The NGT asked the authorities to execute the demolition within six months and to submit a compliance report. The petition was heard before the NGT Western Zone Bench, Pune.
A complaint against the guest house was filed in 2008 after finding it in violation of CRZ rules. The case reached the NGT after several High Court hearings. Interestingly, the Goa Coastal Zone Management Authority had termed the structure as legal in one of its earlier reports.
The illegal guest house falls in five different survey numbers and has several ground and ground-plus-one structures. The construction is post 1991 and is in violation of CRZ rules. The owner Maria Furtado has one last chance to appeal before the Supreme Court, which is the highest appellate authority.
