PANJIM: Incessant rains that lashed the State on Saturday may maroon Sankhali and Bicholim towns once again with water levels of several rivers including Mhadei, Valvanti and Ragada rising to dangerous levels. The State administration has initiated flood mitigation measures.

A flood like situation prevailed in Bicholim and in many parts of Sattari taluka. In Sattari, the Ragada river which is a tributary of Mhadei river and other tributaries of Mhadei were overflowing, causing untold hindrance to the people.
If the heavy rains continue, there was likelihood of flooding of bordering villages. Pumping of water had commenced by flood water pumping station at Sankhali in order to prevent the water from entering inside the market.
Shopkeepers from Bicholim market have also urged the authorities to ensure that water is not released from mining pits near the town, so as to avoid flooding.
Meanwhile, the Indian Meteorological Observatory (IMD), Altinho has issued orange alert Sunday, while yellow alert has been sounded for the next three days from August 26 to 28.
